The Australian aid program has specific strategic goals that aim to ensure people with disability are included in, and benefit equally from, Australia’s development assistance.  This commitment is reflected in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) administered Australia Awards Scholarships program.

In October 2012, DFAT implemented a set of policy and procedures that supports the inclusion of people with disabilities in the global Australia Awards Scholarships program.  Under this policy, around 60 awardees with disability from 29 developing countries have been mobilised to study in Australia in 2013 and 2014.  More information on the policy is available in the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook.

DFAT is currently undertaking a Review of this policy.  The Review is seeking to understand the extent to which DFAT’s policy and procedures in this area have influenced the experience of people with disabilities.  The Review will provide valuable insights on implementation, help identify possible areas for improvement, and facilitate the ongoing inclusion of people with disabilities in the Australia Awards program.  More information on the Review is available by contacting scholarships@dfat.gov.au.
